Description of the Logo

A competition was held in the National College of Art and Design to design an appropriate logo that would be used extensively during the Year of Evangelisation. Rebecca Roughneen, a final year student, won the competition.

Rebecca took as her inspiration a text from St. Mark’s Gospel – The Calming of the Storm (Mark 4: 35-41). She has captured the vision behind the year.

On that day when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go to the other side”. And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great gale arose and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still! Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Jesus said to the disciples “Let us go to the other side” During our Year we will need the courage to follow Christ in new ways of mission and ministry. Even though challenging we need to embrace new opportunities to grow in faith within community.

“Why are you afraid?” Jesus calm’s our fears. He calls on us to trust in Him. Our mission is to place our trust in Him, to fully come to know Him and have confidence in Him.

“Have you still no faith?” Many initiatives are already taking place in some parts of the diocese in the area of evangelisation. There are still a great number of people who have yet to experience Jesus in a meaningful way. Some people need courage, help and direction. This Year of Evangelisation hopefully will provide not just skills and programmes but also an opportunity for people to turn to Jesus in word and faith. It will also provide an opportunity to build up the Church so that all of us will recognise “the Lord working with them and confirming the word by the signs that accompanied it.” Mk 16:20
